Portfolio Management
There are several approaches to managing your investments.
Do it Yourself
If you have carefully read the material on our site, you have already picked up valuable money management advice. But guidelines are one thing and constructing and executing a plan is something else. Without the steady hand of professional management, individual investors tend to fall into one or several traps. They:
- trade too much in an attempt to boost returns;
- get swept up in the latest hot fad (internet, commodities, clean energy)
- fail to rebalance their portfolios;
- do not have a plan or do not stick to it.
Mutual Funds
Mutual funds claim to offer investors the benefits of low cost, diversification, and professional management. But mutual funds suffer from many shortcomings:
High expense
- Because they try to beat the market over the short-term, mutual funds trade often, running up expenses and driving down returns.
Impersonal Service
- No consideration is given to individual investor needs and the fund manager is generally not accessible.
No consistency
- Mutual fund performance is impossible to predict. Today's star is tomorrow's dud.
Fail to time market
- Fund managers claim they can time the market. No one can time the market, so you are really paying high fees for false claims.
Conflicts of interest
The fund managers may favor:
- investment banking clients over your fund
- one of their other funds over your fund
- maximizing their own shareholders' value
- short-term performance rankings over long-term success
Underperformance
- Studies have shown that mutual funds under-perform the market by the level of their annual fees. Expect to pay 3% for the typical Israeli fund.
